Responce to “Fix the shading on the children's faces!”

“Fix the shading on the children's faces!” is a poem that caused me to think directly back to the Mamie and Kenneth Clark Doll Test. Though this poem may not have been written in reflection to that particular test their foundations are the same. For me what is saddening is the fact that when it comes to children they are already able to see the difference with the shades of colors in people skins, and due to the images shown in the media, they are already associating positive or negative connotations with the different shades. I feel that this poem is well written and is one that any future educator should read, analyze and reflect on.

Responce to “We Cannot But Chuse To Hear”

“We Cannot But Chuse To Hear” is a poem that I feel all should read for it seems to bring to light the effect this oil spill is having on the animals. My take on this poem is that the effect and problems of the oil spill are being told through an animal’s suffering. Too often, when disastrous events occur the animals are often the ones last thought of? Unless their voice is brought to life by another, people forget about the effect such events will have on the life and survival of the animal habitants of the affected area. I liked this poems descriptive words for it allowed the poems point to come across as well as allow me to draw a mental picture of this tragedies effect on the animal life.

Reflection Thirteen

Prior to reading this article I had read immensely on race and racism; what they are and the role they have played in our society as well as the society of others. Of the many aspects that fall into both categories I always found it interesting how this country’s, in particular, foundation is build upon it. To think of how and why this country came about and the fact that its inhabitants with their proceeding generations spent much time demoralizing others due to a different ion of race is rather disturbing. Through my literature classes, along with a bit of historical review, this country came about when citizens of the European countries left to have religious freedom among several other freedoms. Upon their arrival here they, in considerable time, abolished the majority of the lands original habitants. Consequent to this slavery came about in this country which not only divided the country but was just the beginning of many years of turmoil for another minority race. To this day, certain racisms and race related issues remain.

Of all that I have read, both through these articles and from past readings, what I find the most interesting is that fact that, one, race is a term that is so fauve that it should not even exist; and two it how the term race has led to the division of human beings. For example the classification of “minorities” in comparison to what is seen as the “majority”. Personally, after reading all that I have on the subject, I feel that it is the creation of terms such as these, and the emphasis that is placed on them that divides society. Though as for the reasoning behind it all I am not informed enough to make a definite theory, however with reading articles such as these I have been able to conclude that the reasoning behind such grouping is due to the way human beings, as a whole, view the world. With respect to society as a whole, I feel that people, majority of the time, need things to be organized and labeled and categorized. Not only does it all allow for things to be organized but it allows humans to solace them self in a self-fulfilling hierarchy.

Overall, reading these articles and using it to link to other related articles really allowed for me to enforce my previously held position on race and racism. Though I feel that both terms should not exist I find it ironic how the very term that has caused so much turmoil in this country is what primarily caused the first flow of European immigrants. It all makes you wonder, is the golden ruling a truly effective rule?

Reflection Number Fourteen

Upon my conclusion of this article I found myself slightly enraged; for this topic of discourse in this article is one that “hits home” due to my being of Haitian descent. Though I believe that those of Cuban descent should be allots all their already given rights and privileges, I strongly feel that the Haitians that came during the “Cuban-Haitian Entrants Lift” should be allotted that same privileges. This fact, that Haitians are treated differently than that of the Cuban culture could be seen as grounds for a charge of institutional racism. For why it is the black and ancestral African islanders not be permitted the wet feet/dry feet accessibility as permits.

Though prior to reading this article I have some knowledge of the Cuban history with the United States, reading this article introduced me to some new information. For example, I was unaware that over 00,000 Cubans immigrated to the United States during the revolutionary government movement. Through reading this article I was also able to learn a vast amount of information of the beginning of Castro reign. I learned of the various changes he made upon being appointed into political power and office. Through this gain of information I was able to realize why there are many who have dealt with turmoil in the country and why the inhabitant of Cuba would want to leave. Even though I do acknowledge that those of Cuban heritage have been through its governmental, social, and economical struggles, I believe that the past and current struggle in Haiti is one that is a more intense level. My belief is so because when one compares Haiti to Cuba it is evident that Haiti is in a more distraught state. The country has gone through a detrimental hurricane and recently a horrendous earthquake that has turned the country upside down. When looking at the history of the two countries, it is blatant to see that Haiti has dealt with more corruption in both its governmental and social construction. For these reasons, and several more, I hold a strong belief that the people from Haiti should have the same permission from the United States to enter the country.

All in all this article, though of sensitive content, was informative and brought light to some areas of the history that I was unaware of previously. Though I was able to learn an immense amount of information, my feelings towards the treatment of Haitians verse Cubans remains and the injustice that is being placed upon the Haitians is grounds for a case to built on the charges of institutional racism.

Reflection fifteen

Prior to reading this article I held a well established view on the topic of homosexuality. I have always felt that though, I do not quite understand the mindset of a person who is homosexual or the reasoning behind it, I respect all those who choose that as their sexual preference as long as they respect me. I don’t feel that because someone has a different sexual preference than I, that they should be treated any differently. They are a human being same as I and they are entitled to their likings and life choices. Upon my conclusion of this article, my views on the topic of homosexuality did not and have not changed from its previous standing. Though, through reading this passage I did learn some new information on the different subcategories that fall under homosexuality and the elements that each category composes. For example, I learned that the gender rolling, a topic that heterosexuality often enforces, is one that has and continues to identify power and dominance with the men species only; this mind set is different for those who take a homosexual liking and preference. In these relationships, the personality characteristics of power and dominance are one that can be taken on by a man or a woman.

As far as the cause of homosexuality, I have felt and still feel after reading this article that there is not a clear “cause”. The way I see it, the same way people can pose the question of why people choose to be in and have a preference for heterosexual relationships is the same question that is asked for those of a homosexual relationship. Who determines what the correct choice and preference is and what makes that person qualified to make such a decision? Those I know many times people refer to their religion as the response and grounds for the answer to this question, but what about those who do no abide by a particular region? What about those who choose to abide by a more spiritual path? What about those who do abide by a particular religion but interpret their book of scriptures differently? Who says that there is one interpretation of that book? All these questions and so many more can be posed when it comes to determining the “cause” of homosexuality and, in my opinion as well as found in many published articles, the definite answer to them has yet to be said.

Though my personal feelings towards homosexuality are one that stands as being against it, I am not a person that will treat other human beings cruelly because of their choices. As a pre-professional educator I feel it is my duty to hold an objective mindset for I will be dealing with a variety of people on a daily basis- a variety that will have different mindsets than I. Therefore I feel that subject such a homosexuality is ones that my previously held notion will not change.

Reflection Sixteen

Prior to reading this article, I was completely unaware of what intersexuality was and meant. At first glance I assumed that it has something that had to do with a person who was born with both genitals. Though, after reading the article, I realized that it was a much more complex term. Upon my conclusion of this article I learned that intersexuality is a term that is built around the concept that men and women are built in ways that are not so different. Through this article I learned that there are many studies being done on the concept that people are born with a mixture of female and male characteristics. Many times when people read studies on this, they associate it with the term hermaphrodite; though, I learned, through this passage, that such a study along with several other aspects fall into the term intersexuality.

After reading this article I spent much time reflecting on this concepts importance. At first, I felt that this subject was a rather touchy one for it is built around a topic that society rarely openly speaks of and often looks down upon. However, after I spent some time reflecting on the information the passage provides, I began to realize that this topic is important to know. Though it is a topic that is often looked down upon it does exist in many cases in our society. As a result of this, I feel that as a pre-professional educator, it is a topic that I not only may be required to teach soon but one that may be a part of my students. Therefore, it is my duty to be informed about it so that I will have the ability to relate to my students and make them feel comfortable in my class. I also now feel that this topic is one that should be discussed more; for it is a topic that is found in society and may soon be needed to help progress it through outlets such as medicine.

Overall, this article is one that proved to be rather interesting; for not only did it shed some light on a topic that is often kept in the dark, but it allowed me to realize the importance in a subject area that I never thought of before. Parallel to its interesting nature, this article proved to be a very informative for it clearly broke down of the scientific studies and theories that have been done on the subject. This allowed for me to not only grasp the information easily but it also was formatted in a manner that allowed me the opportunity to form my own opinion of the subject matter; rather than swaying me one way or another.

Responce to "Si m mourii ou pral mouri"

This piece is one that “hits home” for me for this disaster in Haiti is one that affected my family personally. This piece is one that goes to place a voice to the land of the country in correspondence to its people; a voice that is never heard and often forgotten. What I found interesting about this piece is that the voice that is given to the forestry of the land is one that is unforgiving. It has a revengeful tone is saying that if it dies it will take the people with it. Though the particular event that this piece takes reference to was tragic beyond words, the environmental message behind it is one that all should reflect on. That if the environment is not properly tended to and neglected which would then lead to its demise, the people will suffer as well.

Responce to HB2281

Though this poem makes reference to Arizona and its changing times, this piece also goes to speak of a change; rather a consequence to a change. As my interpretation of this piece goes, this passage goes to speak of language and its ability to be lost through time. If the language and the heritage of that language is unable to stay afloat against the current of the changing time it is lost. This concept is one that many people often are unaware of and quite often forget if aware. Though it is one that many should pay respect to because in a sense when a cultures language is lost a part of that culture is lost as well.

Observation for Equity

This assignment is one that reflects upon and assesses the effectiveness of my chosen observation educator. This entry goes to discuss the methods in which Mrs. Gaudet, Western High School English Educator effectively tends and caters to the needs of her diverse classes. Though my time spent observing Mrs. Gaudet was short, not only as a result of the school years’ conclusion but as a result of her teaching graduating seniors, through my in-depth interview and research of her class lessons I was able to see her techniques to run an effective classroom for all her diverse students.

Though her class composition is founded on a larger foundation of Caucasian students, there is a nice overall diverse composition of her classes as a whole. Through my interview I was able to see and conclude that Mrs. Gaudet is an educator that works to constantly treat all her students equally though she maintains respect for the diversity found in her classes. In order to maintain such this level of equality, Mrs. Gaudet creates lessons and projects that allow for student flexibility and creativity. Most of her lessons are created to work around the class sets of books so that all students have an equal opportunity to learn the same material at the same pace. At the end, as well as throughout the lesson, Mrs. Gaudet creates reflections pieces and or projects that allow students and outlet to display and allot time to fully comprehend what is being taught in class before moving on to a new lesson.

These strategies are ones that intertwine with Mrs. Gaudet method of providing an open climate that adheres to the array of learning styles and uses alternate and diverse learning materials. Through my time spent observing Mrs. Gaudet I was fortunate enough to observe several of her teaching methods that work to execute such tasks. I observed that Mrs. Gaudet uses strategies such as One-on-One Instruction, Pacing of Lessons, and Read Aloud.

Through my short time spent working as Mrs. Gaudet's Teacher Assistant I was able to see that reactions and behaviors of the students to her teaching method. Not only were many of them appreciative of her constant support and respect of their differences. Many of her students on their last day made their remarks to her in regard to the immense amount of material they learned and how they respect her for all she did for them. It was these reactions that warmed her heart as well as mine and it is these same remarks that I aspire to one day receive from my students.

Reflection Twelve

Now that I am college I have always been one to feel that it is during this time of one’s life, that one should learn knowledge that works to broaden the horizon. Up until this past week, I was well read up on the events sand occurrences of the Holocaust, though through my reading of the assigned articles gave me some new insight of the event in our history. Though knowledgeable of that occurrence in history, and keeping true to honesty, the patterns of a Genocide and ethnic cleansing were subjects that I was not very knowledgeable of. Through my reading of these articles, I am not able to say that I hold a good foundational knowledge base of what create s and bring about such horrendous occurrences. Though reading these articles allowed me to learn a vast amount of information on both subjects, there is one aspect that I was able to conclude about the two; and such a conclusion if one that I will never forget.

Though, I learned that both types of killings hold characteristics particular to each, they are both a general form of mass killing by the ethnocentric of a culture. No matter the difference in reasoning behind the killings, they are both examples and occurrence that come about when an ethnocentric group takes control and out of fear and persuasion control the majority. I came to the conclusion that though such occurrences were done by different group for different reasons they only took one person to form a group; a group that would then work to demise another group of human life.

All in all, these articles are ones that proved to be very informative. Not only was I able to learn of the definitions for Ethnic Cleansings and Genocides but I was able to learn of three that shifted history and since have acted as eye openers to the rest of the world. Parallel to my newly gained knowledge, I was also able to conclude that though such atrocities have occurred in the past, whether recent of years ago, they are occurrence that happened and can happen again if we as a people do not work to educate the generations and work to stop the ethnocentric views of the world.

Reflection Eleven

The Holocaust is a topic that turns the stomach of many; for not only does it affect thousands if not millions on a personal level but it is an occurrence that opened the eyes of many on the effects ethnocentrism has on a society if it is not contained and diminished. As for me, the topic of the Holocaust is one that is sensitive, not because it affects me on a personal level but for the experiences I had been through dealing with the topic. In the months of June and July of 2006, I was fortunate enough to take part in the People to People Ambassadorial Program. In this program I was able to visit Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland. Though the entire trip gave me some insight of the many cultures found around the world, the most influential part of the trip was my stay in Austria. This is so because during my travel through Austria I, along with my group, took a tour of one a concentration camp. During this tour we watched a vivid video reflecting and reviewing the events of the Holocaust and its effect on the countries citizens. After the viewing of the video we were taken around a museum that was build next to the camp where artifacts of the Holocaust were hung on display with cards of their individual history. After this was concluded we were taken through the actually grounds of the camp; a camp that years ago held millions prison and eventually to their death.

Reading these articles not only went to further inform me of the tragic events that led up to and constructed the Holocaust. Though the subject is one that, in general, makes me uneasy what disturbs me most is the ridiculous idea that many hold a belief that such an event did not occur; as though the pictures, films, and live testimony of the survivors isn’t enough to prove its occurrence. To think that some people can just discard this tragic and horrendous event as being of nonexistence is preposterous and just plain ludicrous to say the least. Though there are many instances where I believe people have the right to old their own point of view, the topic and validity of the Holocaust is not such an instance. I feel that this event in history is one that all such fully comprehend and get an in-depth understanding for, for it is a true eye opener. Not only did if effect millions worldwide, but it still continues to affect many today.

Overall, these articles are passages that all should read for not only is it informative on the events of the Holocaust, but it allows for people to become informed of the effects of such an occurrence on today generation.

Reflection Ten

Prior to reading these articles I felt that I understood the complexities of prejudice. While in grade school this topic was always in part of the curriculum in almost every subject and I had always been one to go do some research of my own in order to learn more about the topic. Though after reading these articles I realized that though I did have an understanding of what prejudice is, I learned that there were many aspects about the subject that I was unaware of. It was not until I read this article did I learn that prejudice roots down to the core mind set of a person. That it is not just a façade that one puts on but it is truly a set of views that are engraved in their frame of thought. After reading the article “Beliefs, Values, and Attitudes” I realized that these characteristics of a person are intertwined in to their view point for it is the foundation for it. This, entail, links to the prejudicial view of others that some possess.

As I read these articles I was able to learn an immense amount of information I did not know before about the characteristics of prejudicial mindsets. Though I learned a lot of valuable information, one particular segment of the article “Understanding Prejudices” continues to stand out above the rest. On the subheading “Some Impacts of Prejudicial Behavior” there was a small section that brought about the research done on the public schools slowing becoming re-segregated and this climb that it has even made to the university. I was astounded to learn that though many school work so hard to deflect and terminate and segregation, it is still occurring. It was heartening to learn that the level of segregation in the public schools now has reached numbers higher than those of three decades. To think that so much of the hard work many put into getting the schools desegregated is now reversing, is ridiculous. Reading this caused me to really think about today’s society and the influence the older generation, including mine, is having on the children in society. To think that the youth of society is growing up n a society where the numbers of segregation in their schools are higher; it all truly makes one think about where things will end up ten years from now; it scares me.

Though these assigned articles allowed me to learn of how prejudice works, it also acted as an eye opener for me. Through the information read in these articles I came to the conclusion that as a pre-professional educational there is a great role that I have to fulfill. I concluded that being an educator it is not only my role to teach the students the subject matter, but it is my role to help shape them into intellectual individuals; so that they may work to create and put into place a society that all are seen as equal and treated as so.
